RESEARCH UPDATE ![]() Vicki Gerwing works with Sara at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine in UB (Oct '05) ULAANBAATAR-- On September 25,
2005 The Itgel Foundation welcomed Vicki Gerwing, a Research Scientist
from Saskatchewan, to our headquarters in Ulaanbaatar. Thanks to
several generous responses to our appeal for support in September, we
were able to finance Vicki's visit, and the essential disease research
she conducted in collaboration with Mongolia's Institute of Veterinary
Medicine. With the support and expertise of Mongolian scientists
such as Dr. Erdenbaatar, Itgel conducted PCR analysis, microscopic
investigations, and a series of diagnostic tests on various diseases
affecting the Tsaatan herd. This critical research is incredibly
significant. It will enable us to develop treatment programs and
take preventative measures to ensure the health of Mongolia's reindeer
herds, as well as the human population that depends on them.
There are many to thank for making this endeavor possible:

team have now departed Mongolia, our essential staff in
Ulaanbaatar ("UB"), is gearing up for our winter season of capacity
building, project development, and logistical preparations. At the
forefront of this is our new Program Manager, Tumenjargal Gantumur, who
I am proud to introduce to all of you. For questions on our UB
happenings, please contact Tumen at tumen60gal@yahoo.com.
In the coming months, our UB staff will work in tandem with our Colorado team on the development of a Tsaatan Community and Visitor's Center, a collaborative effort that seeks to promote sustainable economic development and increased communication between the Tsaatan community and visitors to the Taiga. Itgel team members on either side of the globe will also be working on creating systems that support the continual supply of necessary medicines to Mongolia's reindeer-herding community, and methods for ensuring accessible veterinary care for their herds. Itgel's staff and volunteers enjoy working together even when thousands of miles separate our team. Wherever you may be in this world, please know that Itgel considers you a valuable member of our team! We look forward to having your continued support in 2006! My Deepest Thanks, Morgan Keay ![]() Dr. Jerry Haigh collects a blood sample from Tuya's (left) reindeer in the west taiga (Sept '05) |
